The Subcommittee on Traffic Engineering is composed, essentially, of the State Traffic Engineers from the fifty-two AASHTO member departments. Its charge is to assess the effectiveness of traffic control strategies and devices for the efficient and safe operation of the nation's highway system. In doing so, its members participate fully in evaluating new strategies and devices, proposed federal mandates, and methods and equipment which reduce costs, lower energy consumption, improve motorist mobility, and guidance and lessen accident experience.

The subcommittee has eight delegates on the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices who oversee the development of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which is the national standard for signs, signals, and pavement markings for the United States. In addition, the subcommittee establishes and maintains a policy (booklet) on the "Selection of Supplemental Guide Signs for Traffic Generators Adjacent to Freeways, Guidelines for Airport Guide Signing, and a Listing of Control Cities for Use in Guide Signs on Interstate Highways." The subcommittee in cooperation with other AASHTO subcommittees also assist in keeping the AASHTO Guide for the Planning, Design, and Operation of Pedestrian Facilities current.
